Trump criticizes GM, CEO Mary Barra for wanting ‘top dollar’ for ventilators

President Donald Trump criticized Standard Motors and its CEO Mary Barra for their response to creating required ventilators amid the coronavirus pandemic and seeking “top dollar” for this kind of work.

Trump, in a tweet, said, “As normal with ‘this’ Basic Motors, factors just in no way feel to operate out. They claimed they ended up heading to give us 40,000 much needed Ventilators, ‘very quickly’. Now they are saying it will only be 6000, in late April, and they want top rated dollar. Constantly a mess with Mary B. Invoke ‘P’.”

In the original tweet, the meaning of “Invoke P” wasn’t right away clear. But Trump followed up with a 2nd tweet saying he was referring to invoking the Defense Output Act that would power businesses to develop this kind of tools.

A spokesperson for the White Household failed to instantly react to a ask for for comment. GM was not instantly readily available for remark.

Trump’s reviews comply with the New York Instances reporting on Friday that GM and Ventec Lifetime Systems, which it is partnering with to create this sort of materials, wished “much more than $1 billion, with quite a few hundred million dollars to be paid upfront to GM to retool a automobile elements plant in Kokomo, Ind., in which the ventilators would be manufactured with Ventec’s technology.”

Trump, in a different tweet, said GM “Will have to immediately open their stupidly abandoned Lordstown plant in Ohio, or some other plant, and Get started Producing VENTILATORS, NOW!!!!!!” He also urged Ford Motor to “get likely on ventilators, quick.”

GM finished operations at the Ohio plant and offered it to an EV truck startup termed Lordstown Motors.

Ford was not right away readily available for remark.
